Wisconsin Artist Paints on Emu Eggs

BRODHEAD,WI - Eggs are for breakfast, for cooking, for hatching and... for ART ? At Sugar Maple Emu Farm, co-owner, Joylene Reavis, uses an eggshell as her canvas. Specializing in colorful flowers, Joylene makes the painted flowers come alive on the dark green background of an emu egg.  Carving brings out the white, blue and turquoise colors that are hidden under the out layer of the dark green eggshell.

Reavis has been painting and carving emu eggs for several years. Once she left her full time "town" job, she found time through the winter months to concentrate on painting and carving these beautiful eggshells. Large size emu eggs are about 5" long with a 3" diameter. The outer color can range from turquoise, to bright green, to dark green, to almost black. Eggshell surfaces can be smooth as glass or textured. Each egg is different; as is each painting or carving. “Most of my work is done on the darker shells,” said Reavis. “It makes a perfect frame for the painting.” Among the more popular subjects for her artwork are flowers, birds and animals. Her eggshell artwork makes a unique gift or a cherished piece of art.

Joylene Reavis' Egg Art can be found at Sugar Maple Emu Farm, Brodhead, Wisconsin. They can be seen on display from May through September at the farm store or visit http://www.SugarMapleEmu.com  .
