Extravagant Emu Egg Awards 2003
Carved/Etched/Sculpted
Emu eggs are unique in that they are actually three layers of
color. The innermost is white, then there is a lovely teal or light green,
finally a dark green coat. As the artist carves into the layers, he
reveals these colors and utilizes them to give depth to his work. All artwork on these pages is copyrighted by both Emu's Zine (with
rights reverting to the artist) and the artist creating the artwork. This
includes photographs of the artwork. Contact the individual artists for
permission before reproducing their artwork for any reason.

"Cross & Vine Nightlight"
This emu egg has vines with
leaves cut out of it with the shape of the cross cut out of the center which
allows light from nightlight to shine through. The cord comes out
through the round paper mache box it is resting on which has been covered in a
brocade material.

Spud McKenzie, Jr.
This emu egg features a new born pup (eyes not even open yet!) being held
in the owners right hand. The artist has utilized many of the 7 layers of
teal to create shading and depth in the hand and fur.

Pharaohs'
Horses
From the
Painting "Pharaohs' Horses"
This painting has been in controversy for years regarding the original artist.
Two paintings came into the public at the same time, one done by a named artist
and one found in a garage sale by an unknown artist. Controversy comes in due
to neither painting being proven to be the original. Who inspired who? Artists
of many different fields have since used this beautiful image in their work.
The artist has recreated the image on an emu egg using all layers of color in
the shell.

"Lewis & Clark - 200 Years"
Exploration of the Louisiana Purchase was ordered by
President Thomas Jefferson in 1803 and took approximately 3 years. Guided
for part of the 8,000 mile journey by Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman, the Lewis and
Clark Expedition not only mapped 2/3 of the American continent, it provided the
first scientific descriptions of 178 plants and 122 animals. This salute to the
200 year anniversary of the event utilizes all layers of color in the emu egg
shell.
