First Place Carved/Etched/Sculpted

Carol Gabany

A gourd artist turned egg artist, Carol Gabany was first exposed to emu egg carving four years ago at the Indiana Gourd Society annual show when she met artist Rob Ghio.  Rob does both gourd and emu egg art, often incorporating the two.  Rob put her in touch with Gary LeMaster, editor of the Eggshell Sculptor.  “My first projects were taken straight from the pages of The Eggshell Sculptor,” said Carol. “I’ve since experimented with different techniques on my own.”  As can be seen from these examples of Carol’s work, she has the ‘touch’ required to work in several layers of eggshell.  Her winning egg, "Dolphin Dance" (above) utilizes all three layers of color in the eggshell, as do most of her other emu egg work.

“Although my first exposure to egging was Rob’s carved emu eggs, it has taken me three years to finally produce some carved emu eggs I am happy with,” said Carol. “Initially, I found it very difficult to “think” in three colors. Now, having completed perhaps two dozen emu eggs, I am more comfortable working with emu eggshells and have come to especially enjoy etching.”

Carol is a member of the Wabash Valley Art Guild Artists and won second place for her carved ostrich egg “Wildflowers” in their 25th Annual Spring Art Show, held in Terre Haute, IN.  Carol works with eggs of all sizes, from the tiny finch to the ostrich.  She tells us that she has explored egg decorating, beading, carving and etching.  “I find I am most intrigued with carving and etching,” she said. “I especially like working with ostrich and emu eggs. I like the ostrich egg because its size affords a larger surface area to work with and the emu egg because it has three distinct layers to incorporate into the finished carved product.”

Carol says that she finds depicting animals through her egg art to be especially challenging because she has had little formal art education.  She is currently preparing for a wildlife art show to be held in Youngstown, Ohio September 27th and 28th.  Anyone interested in purchasing any of Carol’s work should contact her as outlined below:
