First Place Diorama and Second Place Best of Show 2003

Francine Clary

This is the second year in a row that Francine Clary has won the Diorama category of our egg art contest.  A French and English teacher from the Paris suburbs, Francine has developed a world wide reputation for intricate, meticulous work.  Her winning entry in this years contest is certainly no exception. "The Peacock" emu egg is engraved, sculpted and hinged.  She has used all three layers of color in the shell.  The peacock inside is made with fimo, its tail contains real peacock and emu feathers.

The fragile canvas of the egg shell fascinates Francine " My attraction to egg crafting is the challenge of fragility: opening and creating even more delicate this fragile material, using the splits of the shell to make it blossom as the accidents in our lives can be transformed into blessings and harmony. This is my way of expressing my confidence in God who knows that behind our shielding we are more fragile than egg shells."   Much of Francine's work features hinges so cleverly hidden that they are difficult to locate unless you know where they are.

Her work is characterized by the pairing of the finished egg with the perfect holder.  The "Bubbles" egg above is paired with sea horses while the dragonfly is suspended in mid air.  Floral motif holders display the Iris and other garden flowers, while her lovely geisha appears to be balanced on the head of another lovely oriental lady.

A cancer survivor herself, Francine has special empathy for children with the disease.  Sales of her work through De Memoire d'Eufs go to support a children's charity devoted to helping these children.   *Note please that this site may be down for scheduled maintenance at the time this article is published.  Emu's Zine urges you to try the link again later.
