First Place, Painted

Wendy Y. Payseur

Wendy has won the Painted category of the Extravagant Emu Egg Contest for two years running now.  With no formal training in art, the stay at home mom and egg artist praises God for giving her the talent for painting.  Preparation for her art includes sanding the rough outer shell down to the teal in some cases, as with her prize winning emu egg,  "Tiger Paws", below, left.   She does whatever it takes to get the look she wants.  In some cases she is able to paint a scene on an emu egg without doing any sanding.  Given her choice of what to paint, Wendy would choose either flowers or birds.  This year's winning entry,  "Classic Humming Bird", has been sanded down to create a picture window reveling the light blue surface.  The classic painting of a humming bird with an open rose and rosebud (above) is hand is painted in oils.

Roses (like the white roses egg above center or the orange roses to the right) take 4 to 8 hours to paint on an egg, depending on how large an area is being covered.  Add to that the time it takes to sand down the area to make it smooth enough to paint, as she did with both of these eggs.  Some of her designs cover the entire egg.  The "Orange Roses" egg to the right won second place in the Painted Category in the 2002 Extravagant Emu Egg Contest.  Mother's Love, which featured a mother dolphin and baby, won second place in this year's contest.  Autumn Pride, the egg featuring a boxer, won third place.

Wendy's husband, Phillip, is justifiably proud of his wife's abilities.  "Wendy won second place for a painted chicken egg at the North Carolina State fair last October. She hand painted a chicken egg that had a salute to the Wright Brothers First Flight along with a painting of the Hatteras Lighthouse," said Phillip. "The contest was sponsored by the North Carolina Egg society."   The winning egg is shown to the above left.

Wendy paints on a variety of eggs, including all three of the ratite varieties.  "Winter Barn, pictured to the left, features a scene with a pheasant on an ostrich egg.  This lovely piece of art won first place for decorative art competition at the North Carolina State Fair and also first place at the Lincolnton, NC AppleFest.

Wendy is also diversifying her art by getting into glass etching.  She and Phillip will be opening up a weekend exhibit at a local flea market.   Stores interested in carrying Wendy's work should contact her as outlined below:
