This detailed ostrich egg creation salutes Kizzy Lovell, the Gypsy Girl introduced to young readers by Rumer Godden in the early 1970's. The book (The Diddakoi) is well on it's way to being a classic. Artist Maureen Williams offers a very detailed gypsy wagon for collectors with this creation. The Gypsy Wagon was created using a very large ostrich egg with an Old English draft horse barrel figurine for the base. The barrel was removed to allow the placement of the egg. The front of the egg was cut off to allow an inside compartment behind the
driver and hinged cardboard doors were added. The top of the wagon was
elevated using findings to allow ventilation inside as well as to provide visual
interest. The egg was then painted to resemble curved wood planking. Inside are two bunk bed cupboards made from balsa wood finished with
material, covers and tiny cushions. A hand crocheted granny rug makes a cozy bed
for the little black cat. A miniature milk carton and cake tins are on the
table.
