The
Black Unicorn
Visible only to those who search and trust ( and usually mistaken for a
mare)
There are many legends and myths about the Unicorn. First mentioned in the
west by Greek historian and physician, Ctesias in 398 BC, he described them as a
multi-colored animal from India. "Their bodies are white, their heads
dark red and their eyes are deep blue. They have a single horn on their forehead
which is approximately half-a-meter long." In the west the unicorn
was thought to be wild and untamable. In the east it was peaceful, meek
and the bringer of good luck. Both the horn and the blood was reputed to
have healing properties. One legend says that a hunter would use a virgin as
bait to lure the breast in. The maiden would sit under a tree, the unicorn
would approach, drawn by her innocence, and lay his head on her lap. The
maiden would cut off the horn as the unicorn slept - and the hunter would then
finish the poor beast off.
Artist Tina Munford has utilized all three layers of color inherent in the
emu eggshell to create her salute to the Unicorn. The egg is available for
$125.00. The artist will accept commissions for the unicorn on a white
background rather than teal. Please contact her for details. Available
